Laser Vein Reduction
Laser Leg Vein reduction is a non surgical outpatient procedure performed in the office for the elimination or reduction of “spider veins”. Unlike varicose veins or larger leg veins where surgery, sclerotherapy or intraluminal laser therapy may be indicated, “spider veins” can often be quickly and effectively treated using one of several available lasers.
In our office, the Laserscope Lyra 1064 Nd:Yag laser is utilized for this purpose.
Typically, a topical anesthetic agent is applied for up to an hour prior to the procedure – patients are often provided with a prescription for this which can be purchased and applied at home prior to the procedure, which will reduce some of the discomfort from the laser treatment. Depending on the number of veins to be treated, sometimes only a single session will be required. In some patients, depending on the number and size of the vessels, multiple treatments may be required.
Blue colored veins are most responsive to this type of laser. Red colored veins usually will not respond well and will require a different type of laser for best results.
Treatment times vary for each individual, but usually require only minutes, or more after pre treatment with the topical anesthetic.
“Downtime” is minimal and usually consists of redness along the course of the treated veins which will subside over the course of a day or two.
It is best to avoid sun exposure and tanning prior to and following treatments for best effects.
